t 67, Guide Preeti S. is proof that growing older is no barrier to growing continuously as a Lifelong Learner and Guide. Residing in Jalandhar, Preeti found her artistic calling through Pidilite's Arts and Crafts program, rising to Expert Teacher through dedication and skill. While that achievement alone was commendable, little did Preeti know her journey was only beginning. During the global pandemic, she found GetSetUp and joined the online sessions. When she learned of the opportunity to teach older adults on GetSetUp, she leaped at the chance despite her doubts.

"I knew it was a great way to keep them motivated and excited about learning something new. I didn't think I could teach online. But the GetSetUp team encouraged me so much especially Stanley and Anita who encouraged me a lot and helped me throughout. Plus, the best part about my classes is that you didn't have to be an expert to join them.” Preeti recalls fondly. Soon enough, her classes brought joy to many Learners with her zest for creativity and teaching a new craft each class. Her thought for applying for a record came while attending an in-person GetSetUp event in Mumbai. “My primary reason to attend was to connect with fellow Guides, who knew this would become an event I would never forget. It was during the meetup when a Learner floated a suggestion – that my achievements could possibly be used to apply for a  world record.”

Soon enough, among the various World Record possibilities, it was Harvard University that resonated with Preeti the most. This fascination even sparked the idea of possibly attending Harvard University. ”I completed the application procedure via their official platform. As a result, a representative from Harvard's Mumbai Headquarters engaged in extensive discussions spanning nearly two months. Over this period, I shared videos and images showcasing my crafts. Eventually, my efforts paid off, and I received the news of my successful selection. The Harvard representatives played a pivotal role, offering unwavering guidance and support throughout this transformative journey.”

Reflecting on what inspired her daily crafting challenge using trash materials, Preeti shares, "I made all of these things while I was taking sessions on GetSetUp. During those sessions, I made a calendar for a month to decide what I would create each time. I used all the little leftover pieces at home and didn't throw anything away. So, I never really had a time when I didn't know what to make because I had a plan for everything." Some of Preeti's most inventive creations included transforming a dahi vessel into a cup and a frying pan into a wall-hanging clock. She pridefully notes, "A duck showpiece made of Surf Liquid bottle. Like no cost is incurred while creating such stuff, which is truly helpful."

The support from her husband, family, and GetSetUp Learners kept her encouraged throughout, Preeti shares, “Interacting with Learners always brought me such joy. Their enthusiasm for our craft and questions fuelled my imagination. Though focused on teaching, seeing their curiosity also inspired continual growth within myself. Some participants from outside India even woke up at 4 in the morning to attend my sessions. This dedication was incredibly motivating, almost as rewarding as receiving an award. Engaging in GetSetUp team meetings was another source of joy. The shared motivation propelled me, a homemaker, to exceed my expectations. “

Guide Preeti demonstrates that when learning is embraced as a collective effort, possibilities become boundless - even achieving World Records in one's 60s! Today, fueled by her passion and the unwavering support of her community, she proudly holds a Harvard  World Record for creating a new piece of art and craft daily for 12 months.

“As I reflect fondly on our time together, I am grateful for the platform GetSetUp provides - one that strengthens community across backgrounds and abilities, uniting us in lifelong learning's pursuit.”
