hatsApp, with its vast user base of over two billion members worldwide, is undoubtedly a powerful platform that enables meaningful connections across the globe. It offers a simple and convenient way for people to stay connected with their loved ones, friends, and colleagues. However, like any popular platform, there is a downside to consider—the presence of scammers who seek to deceive trusting users.

What is the newest scam going around?

The recent reports of mysterious calls from international numbers with different country codes, such as +84, +62, +60, and more, have raised concerns among users. These calls are originating from countries like Malaysia, Kenya, Vietnam, Ethiopia, and others, identified by their International Subscriber Dialing (ISD) codes. While the exact reasons behind these calls remain unclear, there is a growing concern that they may be part of a scam aimed at financial theft or other malicious activities. It is crucial to exercise caution and avoid answering these calls.

According to reports, individuals have been receiving two to four fake calls on alternating days. Even those who have recently acquired new SIM cards are finding themselves targeted by these international calls. The frequency and persistence of these calls have raised alarm bells among users.

To protect yourself from potential scams related to these mysterious international calls, here are a few steps you can take:

  • Verify the authenticity of any offers before taking action.
  • Enable two-step verification feature provided by WhatsApp to add an extra layer of security to your account and keep your WhatsApp application updated.
  • To address fake random calls received on WhatsApp, utilize the block and report feature. Open WhatsApp, select any chat, tap the three-dotted icon located on the top right corner of the screen, choose 'more,' and then select the block option. You also have the option to report and block the caller using the same menu.
  •  Avoid answering or engaging with any unexpected calls on WhatsApp. Even if you decide to pick up the call, refrain from purchasing any products or services offered by the caller. It's important to be cautious as there are scams, such as part-time job offers, circulating on the messaging platform with the intent to deceive people.
  • Exercise caution and refrain from clicking on any messages or links sent by unknown callers as they may contain malware aimed at stealing your data or money. It's crucial to be aware that hackers or scammers might employ tactics to deceive you into taking actions that could lead to financial loss.
